Rip tier and best specialization

A

A tier on patch 0.5.12

Rip plays in four of the strongest comps, including both S tier Rush Duelist comps, and his runs are among the best on SSS difficulty, though only average overall. Players rate him A and credit much of his strength to Nyx.

Tiers are reviewed by hand after each patch (latest: 0.5.12), weighing the runs players share, most of them in Red Rift, the comps that clear the high difficulties, current player tier lists and recent balance changes. All 25 heroes side by side are on the hero tier list.

Rip has the highest health in the game at 1,250 and converts it into Attack — his damage scales on Max Health, not on Attack. Dropping below half health, on him or on an adjacent enemy, refreshes all his Rush windows, so he is designed to be at the centre of the worst part of the board.

Banking health on Rush

The Glutton, 33 permanent Max HP for every Rush trigger, is Rip's spec in every tier list build except Crit Rush Assassins. In Rush Duelists and Rush Shard Gen Duelists he also holds two Vanguard's Bracelet, each growing by 20 Max HP per trigger, and Crown of Haste, 8 Max HP and 1 Attack per trigger. Every Rush trigger there is worth 81 Max HP, and for Rush (10) Bloodthirsty turns 5% of Max HP into Attack.

The Glutton's first line carries Backup, so a benched Rip keeps banking, and its Backup Only line hands the whole banked amount to every Vanguard in combat when a fight starts, which suits Niklas or Rowan. Rush Duelists Stack keeps him on the field instead, at rank S with Crown of Haste and Bloodfang, 12 Attack and 7 Omnivamp.

Health from Crits, health from casts

In Crit Rush Assassins he switches to The Brute: the Assassin class, 35 Crit (25 before 0.5.2), and on each Crit he steals Health worth half his Crit. His 15 base Crit plus those 35 matches the 50 every Assassin hero starts with, so each steal begins at 25 Health, and the 15 Crit on Sacrificial Scythe raises it.

The quarter of Max HP the Scythe takes at the opening has an upside here: starting lower puts him closer to the 50% line where Bloodthirsty refreshes his Rush abilities, while the steal and the Scythe's own 30 Omnivamp race him back to full for its 5 Shards.

The Enraged is the third option. Each Rampage adds Max HP equal to 10% of Max HP plus 250% of Magic, 5 plus 5 per rank Attack Speed and 2 plus 2 per rank Omnivamp, and the casts stack. The Max HP it adds is the same stat Bloodthirsty converts into Attack, and into Attack Speed once the 50% line is crossed.

What Rip gains per rank

A hero climbs C → B → A → S — 3 upgrades in all. Every stat rises at the same rate on every hero, with one exception: the primary stat of the class rises three to four times faster. For Rip that stat is Health.

Stat gains per rank and total from C to S for Rip.
StatsPer rankC → S
Healthprimary+25%+75%
Defence+8+24
Attack+6+18
Magic+6+18
Attack speed+5+15
Crit+4+12
Mana regen+1+3

Health rises as a percentage of base health; every other stat is a flat addition. The specialization is chosen at rank B, and the class modifier pools open at A and S.

Rank B unlocks the specialization. Rank A adds a class upgrade. Rank S adds a second class upgrade and a fourth item slot. A hero below rank B cannot take a specialization at all.
